![]() ![]() But as Walter struggles with the limits of his own talent and faces the knowledge that Mitch and Susan, his more gifted friends, have already surpassed him, Daniel, his older brother, awakens one morning with a strange lump on his neck that leads to fearful consequences-and to Walter's realization that a happy family, and a son's place in it, can tragically change overnight. Introduced as a child to the genius of Balanchine and the lyricism of Tchaikovsky by his stern but cultured aunt Sue Rawson, Walter has dreamed of growing up to shine in the role of the Prince in The Nutcracker. With compassion and humor, and alternating between Walter's adolescent and adult voices, the novel tells of Walter's heartbreak as he realizes that his passion cannot make up for the innate talent that he lacks. The anecdote about Nana Upstairs having to be tied to a chair to keep from falling out and Tommy asking Nana Downstairs to tie him in a chair, too, is one of the best things that I have ever read. This book steps so delicately upon the walkway of Tomie's youth that its construction is equal to that of the magnificent spiderweb spun by nature's surest architect. ![]() ![]() I feel as if I know Tom, and Nana Upstairs and Nana Downstairs, and all the rest of Tomie's wonderful family as well as if they were my kin, too, and that is truly a special feeling that is hard to fully put into words. It's about love, family, friends, and about facing your own mortality. He meets a devil of sorts when he arrives home and the story goes on from there. Yet again, I chose to see a movie that was very heavily marketed in both music stores and the clothing store in which the film had a partnership, and it should not defer anyone from watching the film.Īs the synopsis suggests, this film is about a postman that discovers he will die very quickly of a terminal illness. For those that are not aware, this is actually a novel adaptation, and while I cannot attest to the accuracy of the adaptation I would argue that as a stand alone this movie is basically flawless. I have been waiting for this film since December, the last time I was at the theatre, and I have waited excitedly since then. Sekai kara Neko ga Kieta nara is one of those films that you anticipate to hit theatres for months and goes beyond all of your possible expectations. What impresses me most about The Scarlet Gospels is the sense of scale you get, its a tale as grand as they come - and yet without losing touch with the individual characters. Luckily Barker decided to create a full-length novel focusing on everyone's favourite Cenobite and Barkers other landmark creation, the infamous private investigator Harry D'Amour. He also seemed more competent that most horror creations of the time, less inclined to lose his prey by all but the narrowest of margins or cheap tricks.Īnyone who has followed Clive Barkers career will know that The Scarlet Gospels has been a long, long time in production - as far back in time as 1998 Barker mentioned he was writing the book, originally planned as anthology with a Pinhead novella included. This guy was the real deal, a character directly from the pits of Hell. This wasn't some guy who'd just gone bad, or a long-toothed creature of the dark. This guy was much more coldly intelligent and collected than any I'd seen before. Hellraiser brought with it a different kind of bad guy. Growing up in the 80's his name was often spoken in quiet awe by impressionable teenagers, not least due to his infamous Books of Blood collections.įor me though it was the character of Pinhead that managed to solidify his standing as a master of horror. I've loved the first two books in this series, but this one was the best in the bunch so far. Torn between duty and his unrequited feelings for Gwen, the stoic Neil is forced out of his comfort zone to protect the one woman he cares about. Gwen and her roommate Karen end up finding dead birds and trouble with the neighbors while Neil's past comes to haunt his present day. I have been fascinated with the strong silent Neil and the chemistry that has been brewing between him and Gwen throughout this series. I couldn't wait to finish the book I was already reading so I could dive into this one. When I won this copy from the author, to say I was ecstatic would be a gross understatement. Since that time I have read and reviewed several more of her stories and she has cemented herself as one of my favorite authors. I loved that book and added Catherine to my list of authors to watch. I discovered Catherine Bybee when I was presented with the book Not Quite Dating in November of last year. ![]() |
